Red Moose on How to Get a Super Shine on Your Shoes
In the hustle and bustle of today’s lifestyle, you may be overlooking those shoes that you stick your feet in every day. We’re here to tell you that a little shine on those shoes is that extra touch when you’re looking to impress a client or a date, and it will also give you a boost of self-confidence—giving you a bit of swagger! On top of all that, the time and effort you invest now will save you much more money in the future, as proper care of your shoes will greatly extend their lives.
Before you get started, you’re going to want to have the right tools. Here’s what you need in your arsenal to get that perfectly polished look.
- Soft cotton cloth (preferably white)
- Horsehair brush
- Cleaner/conditioner
- Polish (cream, wax, or both)
- Large buffing brush
There are a variety of ways to shine your shoes, from just-cream waxes to complete, detailed care of the shoe. But for now, we’re going to focus on the mirror shine, which is aptly named because you should be able to see your reflection in your footwear afterward. This treatment will get your shoes singing in no time!
- Condition
A single light coat of conditioner will provide a quick shine. Use your soft cotton cloth and apply to the whole upper area using a small circular motion. Let it soak in for a couple of minutes, and then buff it out with your horsehair brush.
- Add Polish
The first thing to know is that a little bit of polish will go a long way—use as little as possible! Pick a color that’s close to your shoe color and test it under the laces on the tongue, as that’s a spot that’s usually not visible. Use one-inch circles to spread the polish over the area you conditioned. Wait for 10 minutes and then buff it with the brush. If you’re not happy with the shine, repeat the process.
- Mirror Shine
The toe and heel of the shoe are parts that are a bit sturdier, so they can handle some extra polish. This is where you achieve the mirror shine. Start by putting some water in the lid of your polish tin and dab your cloth in it to lightly dampen it. Add a very small amount of polish and lightly coat the toe and heel areas. Do this again, but use even less pressure than you did the first time. Once you’re at the point where you’re barely touching the shoe, you’re done!
You can attain this shine with Red Moose’s line of shoe polish, conditioner, and other products to put your best foot forward!
