Red Moose's Guide to Buying Leather Boots

Summer is winding down, and boot season will be upon us before you know it. And for men, wearing boots doesn't have to be only something you do when the weather is bad; boots can make as much of a fashion statement for men as it does for women.

So if you're in the market for a new pair of boots after not going out too often in the fall and winter season last year, Red Moose has the perfect step-by-step guide for you.

1. Look for Water Resistance

Boots can be water-resistant and look good too. The key to knowing your covered is through the Goodyear welt. You'll know your boot has a Goodyear welt if the leather part of the boot has a line of stitching connecting it to the sole along the entire perimeter of the boot.

Another benefit to the Goodyear welt is that it's much easier to re-sole the boot when the time comes.

2. Get Full-Grain Leather

Do some research to make sure that you're getting a boot with full-grain leather. This means it's made with the top layer of the animal's hide, which makes it the toughest material that's best for boots. A full-grain leather that's slightly corrected (like Chromexcel) is fine, but if the material is too thin and has a plastic feel, that means it's been corrected too much.

As a rule, avoid bonded leather and genuine leather, as they are cheaper and not as durable.

3. Choose the Right Sole

Leather soles are popular on outdoor, work-style boots but contain little grip. If you're looking for something that will perform better in wet or snowy weather, opt for a studded rubber outsole.

4. The Fit

If you're ordering online, it's important to note that most boots run at least one-half size larger than shoes. So, if you're normally a size 10, order a 9.5 boot. You also might have trouble getting into or moving your foot around in a new boot. For this, try Red Moose's Shoe Stretch Spray. The spray goes on clear and won't damage or stain the material.

5. Protect

Finally, add an extra layer of protection for your new investment by applying our Water and Stain Repellant before you wear your boots for the first time. This small step will give you year-round protection from water and stains.
