Waterproofing your shoes might not be something you think about until it's too late. It just takes one summer downpour or unexpected winter storm to ruin a pair of shoes though, so it's something that you should address now before it becomes a costly mistake.

Before we get started, however, it's important to note that if a shoe isn't specifically sold as waterproof, you will never be able to fully waterproof it. It's more about the best way to make them as water-resistant as possible.

1. Wax-Based Polish

In addition to adding shine, a wax-based polish creates a thin protective layer that helps keep out water and other debris like salt. Be sure to re-apply about once a week or so if you wear the shoes regularly.

2. Mink Oil

Mink oil is a natural product that will not only condition your shoes but protect them from just about anything the elements have to offer. You can buy this in paste or aerosol spray form, and by applying it every two weeks, you will get another protective layer for any shoe type, but especially leather.

3. Candle or Beeswax Method

Here's a DIY way to help with water resistance. If you have a candle or beeswax in the house, rub either product over the entire surface of the shoe. Then, use a blow dryer to allow the wax to melt all over the shoe, which will seal in the wax. If you go with this method, be sure to do it before wearing the shoes for the first time. Remove the laces to the shoe before applying, and you'll want to make sure that you're evenly applying the substance to each part of the shoe.
